How to Compress Images for Online Forms

A step-by-step guide to reducing image file size while keeping enough quality for uploads.

Why do images need to be compressed?

Most online forms and portals limit the file size of uploaded images. Common limits are 100 KB, 500 KB, or 2 MB. If your photo is too large, the upload may fail or the website may reject it.

Compression reduces the file size by removing unnecessary image data and lowering quality slightly. A well-compressed image looks almost the same to the human eye but can be 5 to 10 times smaller.

How to use the Image Compressor

1. Open the Image Compressor tool.

2. Upload or drag and drop your image.

3. Select a target size preset, such as 100 KB or 500 KB, or enter a custom size.

4. Click 'Compress Image' and wait for the process to finish.

5. Compare the original and compressed file, then download the result.

Tips for best results

Start with the highest quality original image you have. Compressing a photo that has already been heavily compressed can cause visible quality loss.

JPEG is usually the best format for photos. PNG is better for graphics with text or transparent areas. WebP often gives the smallest size with good quality.

If the compressed image still looks too soft, try a larger target size or use the Format Converter to change to WebP.
