PNG vs JPG: Which Format Should You Use

JPG (JPEG) is a lossy format designed for photographs. It achieves small file sizes by discarding image details that the human eye cannot easily see. Most online forms and websites accept JPG. It does not support transparency.

PNG is a lossless format that preserves every pixel perfectly. It supports transparency, making it ideal for logos, signatures, and graphics with text. However, PNG files for photographs can be 5–10 times larger than equivalent JPG files.

WebP is a modern format that can be either lossy or lossless. It produces files 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same quality. However, some older systems and government portals may not accept WebP.

Use JPG for: photographs, ID photos, visa photos, scanned documents, and any situation where file size matters more than perfect quality.

Use PNG for: signatures with transparent backgrounds, logos, screenshots with text, and images that will be edited multiple times.

Use WebP for: modern websites and platforms that support it. Always check the upload requirements first.

When in doubt, use JPG. It is the most universally accepted format and provides good quality at reasonable file sizes.
